A lot of people on the America’s Funniest Home Videos message boards (which we regularly look at and help moderate) have been asking us on a near DAILY basis: hey guys, why don’t you write more about the grunge era?!? Flannel! Doc Martins! Long, shaggy hair made suitable for banging back and forth. Why aren’t you happy clappy millennials writing about this bygone era on a daily, nay…HOURLY basis? Which I say back to them: eaaasy. There are no videos from that era! Yes, we debuted in 1989 and YES, we have plenty of clips from that hour of grunge bands wiping out on stage and failed stage dive attempts and teens getting their large grungy hair tangled together, but the clips…well, the clips just haven’t been placed in front of us in a way that makes exploring them possible!
UNTIL TODAY! This week, a really great…dare I say, AMAZING video came sliding across my desk ala Tom Cruise in “Risky Business” (a film that, let’s be honest, is fairly ‘meh’ in hindsight) which captures the spirit of the nineties while also keeping it crisp and tight with a new era of high quality video production. And who better to capture that spirit, than the Kurt Cobain-led trio from Aberdeen – Nirvana.
A lot of people don’t know this but before forming Foo Fighters, lead singer Dave Grohl played drums in this regionally successful three-piece outfit. On bass was a super tall guy named Krist Novacelic and they were really, really quite good. Other bands that sprang up around the time were Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, Earth, Screaming Trees, Black Happy (later paired down and reformed as Shoveljerk), Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and my personal favorite: Sweet Water! Okay, they weren’t my favorite, but Sweet Water had some jams. Particularly one. Anyway, in this hilarious video, a little girl gets to head-banging but loses full control of her extremities and falls head over heels, face-first into a couch. It’s pretty sweet. Go Supersonics!
