5 Reasons Twins Could Help You Win Top Chef

July 13, 2018

Do you have the skills, passion, talent, and creativity to win the next season of Top Chef? Past winners have demonstrated that it takes much more than cooking really awesome food to win the most famous cooking show on television. It takes speed, thinking outside the box, and daring strategies to come out on top against the best chefs in the world. Past seasons have also proven that you can’t do it alone. Since half the series is comprised of team challenges, strategy is key when choosing teammates who won’t drop the ball or crack under pressure.

Consider yourself the luckiest contestant alive if a pair of twins happens to bring their knives to your season of the competition.  As a result of both genetic and environmental influences, twins have special strengths and an ability to successfully work together that no singletons will ever have.  Their superpower-like capabilities cannot be learned or copied by someone who doesn’t have another person made out of the same DNA by their side.  If you’ve found yourself amongst the best of the best and have made it to the Top Chef stage, and are willing to do whatever it takes for the win, then choose your fellow twin contestants as your teammates, and you will chop, fry and flip your way straight to the top.

It’s been reported that up to 50% of twins develop “twin talk,” or Cryptophasia, a language that only they can understand.  For many people, this is proof that the special bond between twins imparts some sort of superhuman communication power.  Twin speak is also sometimes called idioglossia, a similar phenomenon, but one that doesn’t include the mirrored actions and mannerisms that typically accompany cryptophasia. That is, twins don’t just speak in sync, they often move in sync, too.

Having twins on your team who speak a secret language means they can verbally communicate without anyone else knowing what they’re saying.  Their secret code can speed up productivity between the two, as they are able to say anything out loud without opponents knowing what they’re up to.  You might feel a little left out, and they could be saying harsh things behind your back, but if your eye is on the prize, then it’s a small price to pay.

Twins are more likely to be left-handed which can be a key factor to your team’s success.  About one in five twins, both fraternal and identical, are left-handed, according to a 1996 Belgian study. That’s about double the rate of the general population.  Scientists say that left-handed people are smarter in a way that directly relates to what it takes to win Top Chef.

Lefties excel in a cognitive function called “divergent thinking,” or the ability to generate new ideas based on existing information.  Lefties who are divergent thinkers are often drawn to careers in mathematics, architecture, and fine arts, so it would make sense that they would also have a knack for cooking.  More recent studies have proven that left-handed individuals demonstrate superior spatial skills, mental flexibility, and working memory.  Though left-handed people aren’t considered to be overall more intelligent than right-handed folks, they dominate positions like a head chef that requires both technical skills and creativity.

Having trouble reaching the pan on the top shelf?  No need to worry if you have twins on your team.  Research has confirmed that taller women are more likely to have twins than shorter women, resulting in taller children.  Taller women have more of an insulin-like growth factor that has been linked to height and the rate of twin births.  Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) is also associated with growing long bones (hence tall women) and stimulating more than one egg to drop, resulting in multiple birth pregnancies.  Having a long reach and a head above everyone else is always better in a cut-throat, timed competition of skill and stamina.

Since birth, twins have always had another person by their side, making teamwork one of their strongest traits.  Should you make it to the final round of Top Chef and are asked to pick 2 sous chefs to assist you in your final challenge, you better believe the twins are your best options.  Twins excel at teamwork, especially when it’s just the two of them because they’ve literally been each other’s other half since before they were born.  A connection that strong can’t be beaten, so when you’re about to take on the cooking challenge of your life and you need reliable help, the twins will deliver on a level that no one else can.

Every challenge is timed, and it’s never nearly enough time as one would normally need to execute the same task in a restaurant setting.  This is especially true for team challenges because there are more hands and minds working together to beat the clock.  Having twins on your side is advantages because even though they have the same DNA, one might be a master griller and the other might be a sauce connoisseur, and you need both when racing against the clock.

“Restaurant war” challenges require a team to transform an empty space into a restaurant, select and create the name, theme, decor and menu, all in ONE HOUR.  In this instance, everyone is in charge of a different task and therefore, not everyone can have the same strengths and weaknesses.  You can count on twins to deliver the same work ethic and attention to detail while utilizing their individual expertise.

There’s no doubt that if you are among the world’s most elite chefs who hit the Top Chef stage, then you have what it takes to succeed on your own.  You probably already have a flourishing culinary career packed with success and fame, and will most likely continue on your own after the competition ends.  But the cooking world on Top Chef isn’t like the real world and requires you to rely heavily on others to win.  Selecting the perfect teammates could be the most important strategy for success.  Choosing twins to propel your teams to the top is the smartest and most fool-proof way to go after victory!
