Groundhog Day is coming up soon on February 2nd, which means we’ll know in two short days whether or not we can expect six more weeks of winter. If you’re unfamiliar with the myth of this tradition, it goes something like this: “if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day sees a shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will persist for six more weeks, and if he does not, due to cloudiness, spring season will arrive early”. Maybe it’s because of the silliness of the tradition overall, or maybe it’s because groundhogs aren’t usually found in most of the United States, but I for one have never seen one out in the wild!
I’m sure this person was shocked to see a wild groundhog in her backyard, and even more shocked to see it chasing after her dog!
This pet owner must have had some serious faith that her dog could take care of himself, and defeat the groundhog in this one on one backyard battle! Otherwise, she may have gone chasing after the both of them instead of filming the whole ordeal and submitting it to AFV.
I bet this was a day that dog wouldn’t want to live over and over again!
The good news is, the groundhog does seem to give up on catching the dog pretty quickly. He stealthily hops back through the yard, and into his burrow. I’m sure he’s getting ready for his big day, so he can let us know whether or not we should prepare for six more weeks of snowy winter, or get ready to unpack our flip flops and get out the sunscreen. (I definitely know which one I’m hoping for!)
Filmed anything as kooky as this in your own backyard? We want to see it! Submit your video here.
