Do you remember cassette tapes? There was a moment in time when cassette players were the coolest thing ever! Those were the days! It has actually been a long time since cassette tapes and cassette players have been around! If you grew up in the 80s or 90s, this video will make you laugh out loud for sure!
Two little girls are having a conversation with their mom. One of the girls is holding cassette tapes while they’re both trying to figure out what they are for. And their guesses are totally priceless! You just have to hear them! You can tell that they are really confused with those antique objects. LOL! And who can blame them? Nobody uses cassette tapes anymore. One of the little girls thinks that cassette tapes are “memories” that hold videos that people made back in the 80s. LOL! So funny!
A cassette was introduced at the Berlin Radio Show by Phillips in Europe in 1963. This simple and small object was the highlight of the event, and the whole buzz was about it! However, cassette format, when initially released, did not offer reliable sound quality. It was aimed and marketed for recording voice and dictation. Fortunately, the technology improved rapidly, so we got to see the cassette tape in all its glory. Soon, the cassette tape was the object of desire of teens around the globe. Just like the vinyl was decades earlier.
However, the fall was as quick as the rise. Following its peak in the late 1980s, the market for cassettes dropped sharply in both Western Europe and USA. This decline was particularly noted when CDs rose to its fame in the early 90s. By 1993, cassette player shipments had dropped by 7% and continued to plummet for years to come. In 2001, cassettes covered less than 5% of all music sold. Despite the fact that most U.S. music companies stopped making cassettes by the end of 2002, surprisingly blank cassette tapes are still being made and sold in some stores today!
However, the younger generation has no idea what cassettes are! Do you remember the bliss of buying an empty cassette tape and then recording your singing, radio songs, made up interviews? Although now we have even better technology on our mobile phones, nothing beats that feeling, don’t you think?
